SUMMARY:Dr Ryan French PhD\, MSci\, FRAS\, AFHEA - Solar Physics
DESCRIPTION:Dr French is a solar astrophysicist\, currently working at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) in Boulder\, Colorado\, but we hope he will be back in the UK by November. \nHe is working to pursue the mysteries of the Sun at the forefront of modern solar physics research\, using cutting edge telescopes on the ground and in space. In particular\, his research investigates explosive events called solar flares on the Sun\, which are a key component of “Space Weather” here at Earth.

SUMMARY:Paul Costa - An Atacama Astronomical Adventure
DESCRIPTION:Society member Paul Costa went to the Atacama Desert in May this year\, and our WhatsApp group was treated to some jaw-dropping photos that he was kind enough to share. He’ll talk to us about his trip. \nA bit of background : The Atacama Desert in northern Chile is often described as the driest non-polar desert on Earth. Some weather stations in its core region have gone years\, and historically even decades\, without recording measurable rainfall. The combination of dry air\, high altitude\, and clear skies makes it one of the best places on Earth for astronomy. Major facilities include ALMA Observatory and Paranal Observatory\, home to some of the world’s most powerful telescopes. The Vera C Rubin observatory is located on the southern edge of the Atacama Desert region. Parts of the Atacama are so barren that they are used by space agencies to test instruments destined for Mars. \nThere will also be a presentation on the sky at night for the coming month. If you would like further details then please contact Anita King.

SUMMARY:Dr Elizabeth Cunningham - Dark Matter\, why we think 95% of the Universe is missing.
DESCRIPTION:Dr Elizabeth Cunningham from Surrey University will talk about how the objects we can observe in the night sky account for less than 5% of the total Universe. Scientists believe that the rest is made up of elusive substances called dark matter and dark energy. We can’t see it\, we don’t know what it is and yet hundreds of scientists around the world are looking for it. This talk will explain the puzzle of dark matter – why we think it’s there\, what scientists think it could be and what they are doing to find it. We will see that there is more to our Universe than meets the eye. \nThere will also be a presentation on the sky at night for the coming month. If you would like further details then please contact Anita King.

SUMMARY:Mr Peter Goodhew FRAS - Deep Sky Photography
DESCRIPTION:Peter is a Fellow of The Royal Astronomical Society. a member of the British Astronomical Association and the Webb Deep-Sky Society. He started out in astrophotography some 10 years ago. His images have been published in many publications including the BBC The Sky At Night\, the British Astronomical Association\, Sky and Telescope Magazine and Astronomy Now Magazine and Website any many more. He will share some of his trials and tribulations as he has evolved from being an absolute beginner setting up a telescope on a tripod in his back garden\, through building a fully robotic home observatory at home\, and to now operating 3 remote robotic telescopes at a dark site in Spain. \nThere will also be a presentation on the sky at night for the coming month.\nIf you would like further details then please contact Anita King.

SUMMARY:Astha Chaturvedi (FRAS) - Mitigation of Light Pollution due to Artificial Satellites
DESCRIPTION:Astha is a PhD researcher in astrophysics at the University of Surrey. She leads a collaborative project with Surrey NanoSystems to address satellite-induced light pollution\, which is an emerging threat to astronomy. Her research explores the use of an ultra-black coating to reduce the optical brightness of low-Earth-orbit satellites. The results of her work suggests that the coating can bring satellite brightness close to the International Astronomical Union’s threshold for light pollution\, offering a promising mitigation pathway. \nThis work is set to be published in a peer-reviewed journal and has already been presented at the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) and NAM 2025. It has also attracted interest from the broader public\, United Nations and media\, helping to raise awareness of the scientific and policy challenges associated with space sustainability. The coating will undergo in-orbit testing aboard the Jovian-1 mission in 2026\, further advancing the link between academic research\, industry innovation\, and environmental sustainability in space. \nThere will also be a presentation on the sky at night for the coming month. \nIf you would like further details then please contact Anita King.
